Development of turbulence in subsonic submerged jets
نویسنده
چکیده
The development of turbulence in subsonic submerged jets is reviewed. It is shown that the turbulence results from a strong amplification of the weak input noise that is always present in the jet nozzle exit section. At a certain distance from the nozzle the amplification becomes essentially nonlinear. This amplified noise leads to a transition of the system to a qualitatively new state, which depends only slightly on the characteristics of the input noise, such as its power spectrum. Such a transition has much in common with nonequilibrium noise-induced phase transitions in nonlinear oscillators with multiplicative and additive noise. The Krylov–Bogolyubov method for spatially extended systems is used to trace the evolution of the power spectra, the root-mean-square amplitude of the turbulent pulsations, and the mean velocity, with increasing distance from the nozzle. It is shown that, as turbulence develops, its longitudinal and transverse scales increase. The results coincide qualitatively and also, in specific cases, quantitatively, with known experimental data. Preprint submitted to Elsevier 28 November 2003 Published in Phys. Rep. 397, 1-62 (2004).

متن کاملThe transition to turbulence in slowly diverging subsonic submerged jets
We address the problem of how turbulence is created in a submerged plane jet, near to the nozzle from which it issues. We do so by making use of a WKB-like asymptotic expansion for approximate solution of a complex, linear, fourth-order differential equation describing small deviations from the steady-state stream function. The result is used as a generating solution for application of the asym...

A series of coaxial dual-stream jets issuing into quiescent air was investigated using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes calculations with linear two-equation and nonlinear two-equation explicit algebraic stress turbulence modeling. Prevailing high-speed air-breathing propulsion systems invariably banks on coaxial jets which plays a vigorous role in stabilization of flames and combustion emission. Coaxial jet nozzles regulate spreading rates by developing virtuous mean flow and shortening primary flow potential core l...

Experimental results are presented on a method that eliminatesMach waves from the exhaust of supersonic jets and, hence, that removes a strong component of supersonic jet noise. Eliminationis achievedby surrounding the jet with an annular stream at prescribed velocity and temperature so that all turbulent motions become intrinsically subsonic. No mechanical suppressors are used. Implementation o...
